The Canterbury High Country Fire Team (HCFT) are a dedicated group of volunteers who are employed by Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) for rural fire suppression throughout Canterbury and wider Region 4 area.
In Canterbury, the HCFT is the only volunteer fire team specialising in fighting rural fires in the Hill and High Country. Working for Fire and Emergency New Zealand, the HCFT helps protect the public, forests and conservation land in the High Country, often working alongside the Department of Conservation (DOC). The team also has strong links to Scion Rural Fire Research, proving assistance at research burns. Learn more about being part of the HCFT.
The High Country Fire Team has a long history that began in the early 1970s after a major fire in the Liebig Range, Mt Cook National Park destroyed over 1600 ha before finally being extinguished by rain. Read more about our history.
It's a big job and we need your help. Find out what's involved in joining the team.
